Overview

The Water Quality Section is responsible for administering Chapter 3701-28 of the Ohio Administrative Code (private water system rules). This program reviews and approves permits for the construction, alteration and abandonment of private water systems. A private water system is defined as a water supply system for the provision of water for human consumption, other than a public water supply system. This includes all water wells, cisterns, springs, ponds and hauled water storage tanks.

What We Do

  • Issue permits for new private water systems
  • Issue permits for alteration of private water systems
  • Issue permits for abandonment of private water systems
  • Provide field consultation regarding existing wells
  • Inspect and sample new/altered wells to verify compliance
  • Provide water sampling for water quality parameters
  • Private water system inspections and water sampling for real estate transfers
  • Review private water system variance requests to present to the Board

How do I get my water tested?
Complete and submit the Water Sample Request Form

If you want your private water supply tested for lead, please contact a lab that is certified to do that.

How do I get a private water system permit?
Contractors normally file applications as they receive them from the Ohio Department of Health (the agency that monitors and registered private water system contractors). Permit applications may be picked up at this office or mailed.
